Dust Settles – Not Your Usual Alternative Wedding Fair

Dust Settles – Not Your Usual Alternative Wedding Fair

The other week I packed up my badass jackets in Delores the mini and hit the road to go exhibit at the Dust settles – alternative wedding fair hosted by The Costa Sisters at The Shack Revolution in Hereford.

I had an absolute blast at this Las Vegas themed wedding fair and probably one of the most chilled out ones I have been too.

Not only were the other vendors incredibly talented and fun to meet but the entertainment was spot on too — more about that later

As I rarely do wedding fairs I had to get my thinking cap on as to how I wanted my stall to look. I wanted it to be inviting, relaxed to browse and my jackets had to be on show as I found been on rail doesn’t do them any justice.

I had a vision in my head of how I wanted it too look so I took it to paper and luckily enough my dad the handy man was able to build me the stands that I needed. Boom it was just what I wanted and perfect for showing off my jackets too because that was the main thing.

My kick ass stall at Dust Settles

The best thing about this wedding fair was it started at 5pm so there was no rush to get there early and had the majority of the day to set up – it was all chill!

I got to meet some fantastic couples who were excited about getting married and it was lovely to know that most of them followed me on instagram already to which they were interested to see my jackets in real life. So thank you if you are reading this and came along that day it was awesome to hear that.

Now nothing makes an alternative wedding fair like all the other vendor involved and here is just some of the kick ass suppliers involved that I highly recommend you check out if you are looking for your wedding

Peach and Wolfe – Dreamy badass stationary

Skin and Bones Jewellery –  Incredible designs and just beautiful

The Cake Spa – Marshmallows to die for and the yummiest cakes you’ll ever see.

Pink Palm Events – The raddest events planner

The House Of Love Illustration – Live illustration at your event – how cool

This Will Be Forever – prop hire to die for

But wait there is more and you can find the whole line up of vendors to view here

Now for the entertainment… well all I need to say is what a show they put on from fire breathing badass babes, killer catwalk to a drag bingo and a Trump drag act which was just hilarious and would just be the best thing to shock your auntie at the wedding with but on a serious note do check out these peeps because if you are looking for something alternative for your wedding then look no further.

Im going to leave you with these stunning pics taken by Alt Wedding Co who have also taken the photos that I have used in this blog post.

Born to Thread’s best round up of 2019 – the business lessons I’ve learnt

Born to Thread’s best round up of 2019 – the business lessons I’ve learnt

Merry Christmas everyone!

Yes, its nearly time for the big day to arrive and for us to kick back, relax enjoy some family time and eat well probably way too much food!

But before that happens I wanted to do a round up of all the incredible things that have happened with Born to Thread this year and the lessons/ business lessons I have learnt because you know self employed life isn’t just a walk in the park.

Let’s kick off with the fun stuff.

This year I have had some incredible orders for me to make  jackets and personalised leather jackets, they have really tested me in a good way but have been so much fun to make.

Honestly I cannot express how much I love making them but what is even better is seeing my amazing clients rocking them.

I’ve had jackets worn in New York where I also made my final wedding dress (more on that later) for a kick ass bride to wear, matching jackets in Las Vegas, check out the badass couple here and I even got to make a Kiss inspired design for a silver jacket.

Not sure what that would look like then read all about the handmade Kiss jacket here.

It’s not all being about jackets though, I feel like I have really grown into my business this year and found clarity on how I want to go forward into 2020.

This year I have really invested into learning new skills not just with in sewing but more on a business side.

I always used to shy away from learning because I didn’t think I was good enough which I know now that it stems from being put down at school but over the past couple of years I have really enjoyed learning and especially about business.

I really geek out on it now and love taking courses. This year I have learnt about the finance side which was a biggie for me but really went for it head on and it wasn’t a bad I thought! One of my favourite books I have read was Profit First – eye opener for sure and highly recommend.

Have you guys heard of the No Bull Business School, no? Well, you need to check out Sarah’s courses, she really knows her shit when it comes to business and the courses I have taken have been a real kick up the bum, they have made me look at my business in different way so much. Also if you are looking for a bit of personal development I’d highly recommend her Money + Manifesting course.

Another amazing lady to follow and invest in her knowledge is Maddy Shine – she is like the queen of SEO and I have learnt so much in terms how focus more on my website and figuring how it all works! Honestly I am so happy I took her course because SEO doesn’t seem so scary anymore and to learn how it works is like one of these ah-ha moments.

Towards the end of the year I decided to work with Leah from The Fashion Cultivator. Leah has incredible knowledge of the fashion industry and has over 10 years buying skills.

I stumbled across Leah through a Facebook business group and when I found out she worked within leather jackets when buying I knew instantly that we had to work together. We’re currently working on a new collection which I’m hopefully gonna drop at the end of February – watch this space!

Phew just looking back on that has been a real opener for me, It’s amazing how much you forget over time but writing it down really helps to see how much you have done.

Even just on a personally level too, this year I have really found more confidence in myself too, as a person who has suffered from anxiety and panic attacks over the years I have worked hard to over come them.

I mean they still sneak up on me a times but I know no to be afraid of them and it’s just my body telling me I need to step back and relax a little.

Which if your self employed yourself then you know that it can be hard to do, but I’d highly recommend to avoid burnout?

I think its actually better to take breaks because it can fuel your creativity so much more.

As 2020 is coming up strong have a little think of how far you have come over the past 20 years or 10 years and be proud of how far you have come.

Write it down be grateful for the lessons your learnt and growth you have achieved.

One last thing

I’m proud of myself is overcoming my fear of showing my face on video, Instagram stories – I actually love it now and I have met so many fun people through showing up and talking.

I talk all about different areas of my business to fabrics, products and everyday rambles so come join me if your intrigued.

So know the lessons I have learnt through all of this:

  • Stepping out of your comfort zone is a good thing, fear helps you grow.
  • Saying yes could lead you to amazing outcomes
  • Stay strong and know your worth… This has helped me so much over the past couple of years
  • Take breaks! I am human and I can’t do everything
  • Stay in my lane, don’t compare myself to anyone my journey is just as incredible as theirs is.
  • Not everyone is gonna like my work and that is OK
  • Strategy in business is key if you wan to grow
  • Social media is not real – but awe should all know this. Using it in the right way can be so beneficial but using it in the wrong way will just see you spiralling into comparison – Don’t do it.
  • One thing before I forget is I learned that some of my services are not for me anymore. Like earlier I mentioned about the wedding dress, well this year I decided to stop making them not because I don’t like doing them its because my passion for leather work and making jackets is so much stronger that I decided to focus on them. I was a big thing for me to do but you know what I really feel like it was the right decision.

So I think that concludes my lengthy post about 2019 haha. Woohoo I feel good for writing this now as I can see that 2019 was a kick ass year but I’m so excited for 2020.

I can feel it’s gonna be a prosperous year for us all.

Mantra: 2020-You do you always

How to order from my custom leather jacket service

Wanna go custom? but not sure how or what I offer, then fear not, this post is to help and how the journey works when you order one of my badass jackets.

What makes my jackets different?

A lot of people are shocked when they find out that my jackets are made from scratch, yes that’s all of it, from the design to pattern cutting working with your measurements, cutting out of the fabric to sewing the design and jacket Pretty cool huh?

It definitely makes it like no other you’ve seen before.

I taught myself how to make a jacket from an existing one I had, then developed the patterns to change the style and create the perfect fit.

It also happens to be a personal favourite item of mine which is why I absolutely love making them.

Each one of my custom leather jackets is made from high-quality leather sourced from an ethical leather merchant in Northampton UK and you can read more about why I use real leather here

All handcrafted by my fair hands from my home studio in North Yorkshire UK.

I have options for plain jackets or designs with a personalised design to your requirements, where each design is hand-drawn and cut out in leather to create a truly unique investment piece just for you.

HOW IT WORKS

  • Jackets will be made from my blocks to your measurements and can be personalised to suit whatever design you have in mind.
  • I start by discussing via email or zoom about your designs ideas, fabric colours, sizing, FAQs, and for me to get a feel on how to bring your personality into the jacket with my design knowledge.
  • Follow up of all info discussed through a confirmed email
  • I then take your design idea and draw it up in digital form so you get an idea of what it will look like
  • I can send any fabric samples to you in person before the making of the jacket to make sure you’re 100% happy with the colours and fabrics
  • A sample of the jacket will be sent with a zoom call for me to check the fit before making in leather
  • Email updates on the process of your jacket to make sure you are 100% happy with how it’s looking.
  • PDF printout on how to care for your jacket
  • Lifetime guarantee

Whats been happening

Whats been happening

Whats been happening? Well I’ll tell you its been a busy few months over here in BTT HQ! I’ve had sparkly sequin bridesmaid outfits on the go which are all ready to be posted out for a December wedding.

I also had a custom jacket for a Beetlejuice themed wedding which I made back in September… I mean how cool is that.

The bride made a definite decision that she want red and a black and white striped lining to be involved, so for the back patch we went for a red glitter heart and a pearlised white leatherette for the ‘wifey’ writing, both elements are all cut out and handmade specially to use on one of my jacket which are also handmade from scratch.

I found this awesome black and white striped fabric online and knew it was a must to use for the lining, everything was starting to team up really well and went with the theme of the wedding deliciously.

The shape and style of the jacket was cropped which meant the length was cut shorter, with this style sits nice and fitted into the waist. This is also a perfect choice if you didn’t want to hide any detailing you had on the back of the dress.

Last week I received this awesome picture of the bride who had finally eloped to Vegas to marry the man of her dreams. Don’t you just love the whole look and how rad does the jacket look with her kickass red dress – Goals right there!

Here are some more close up shots for you to feast your eyes over. My 2018 books are now closed but if you are looking for your very own personalised handcrafted leather jacket for 2019 then contact me today so we can discuss!

Punk Rock Pizza Elopement Styled Photoshoot

Omg! Pizza elopement…. well who wouldn’t want to get married in a pizza place – How cool

A few months back I was contacted by the lovely Nina who runs Wedded Kiss, she had absolutely fallen in love with my jackets and wanted to feature them in a shoot that they were organising.

I absolutely love being involved in shoot and this one sounded exciting so I said yes, They were going for a rockabilly / punk rock theme so I thought my white heart breaker and pink wifey jacket would be perfect! so I popped them in the post and prayed they would arrive safely in America ready for the shoot.

It’s so great to see so many ideas for wedding these day and you don’t have to stick with the traditions – I mean who wants that!

You should defiantly bring YOUR personality into it no matter what and that is defiantly what this styled shoot was all about.

Pizza, style and most of all a loving couple which the photographer Arika Jordon captured beautifully.

Feast your eyes on these beauties and then maybe go plan a wedding with pizza involved!
