Well, 2020 was a crazy one wasn’t it, to say the least, I don’t know about you but the whole year seems to kinda blur now. It was like it dragged but went so quickly at the same time, luckily we had some good British weather to help a little.
I don’t think any of us were expecting to spend so much time at home, having zoom parties/ quizzes and wearing face masks to go out. Last march when everything came to a standstill and we had to go into lockdown, I kinda had a slight panic as most people did on what was going to happen with my business – would it survive.
It was the fear of the unknown set in as I can probably say many of the younger generations had never experienced anything like this. With orders being slow I saw an advert for face masks need to be made and I set about having a go at making some from fabric, I was worth a go and in my mind, I just wanted to feel like I was helping in some way.
For my first run of face masks, I just asked for a donation to be made to the NHS as it was heartbreaking to see them under so much pressure, now here’s the kicker as there are always people out there ready to bring you down when you try to do a good thing.
Maybe it was fear on their part and most people were angry at not knowing what was going on but I was accused of encouraging people to mix and how is a face mask going to help etc. That was definitely not my intention and people were asking for them to be made so I was slightly confused. My natural reaction was to stop doing them of course as I felt terrible that people would think this but with encouragement from friends and family, I decided to keep making them.
I am so glad that I did because not only did I raise money for the NHS, in the beginning, I went on to sell them in my business and saved it with bringing money in to help me with running it and I still raised money alongside them.
My badass customers rocking their face masks
From March to September I raised £600 for the NHS with making face masks. I feel super proud to be able to say that and feel like I helped in some way. It got crazy at times with shortages of elastic, long delays in deliveries and fabric selling out but I got them all sorted one way or another.
I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who ordered one from me and continues to do so as was you who helped save my business through what was and still is a very strange time.
