Dust Settles – Not Your Usual Alternative Wedding Fair

Dust Settles – Not Your Usual Alternative Wedding Fair

The other week I packed up my badass jackets in Delores the mini and hit the road to go exhibit at the Dust settles – alternative wedding fair hosted by The Costa Sisters at The Shack Revolution in Hereford.

I had an absolute blast at this Las Vegas themed wedding fair and probably one of the most chilled out ones I have been too.

Not only were the other vendors incredibly talented and fun to meet but the entertainment was spot on too — more about that later

As I rarely do wedding fairs I had to get my thinking cap on as to how I wanted my stall to look. I wanted it to be inviting, relaxed to browse and my jackets had to be on show as I found been on rail doesn’t do them any justice.

I had a vision in my head of how I wanted it too look so I took it to paper and luckily enough my dad the handy man was able to build me the stands that I needed. Boom it was just what I wanted and perfect for showing off my jackets too because that was the main thing.

My kick ass stall at Dust Settles

The best thing about this wedding fair was it started at 5pm so there was no rush to get there early and had the majority of the day to set up – it was all chill!

I got to meet some fantastic couples who were excited about getting married and it was lovely to know that most of them followed me on instagram already to which they were interested to see my jackets in real life. So thank you if you are reading this and came along that day it was awesome to hear that.

Now nothing makes an alternative wedding fair like all the other vendor involved and here is just some of the kick ass suppliers involved that I highly recommend you check out if you are looking for your wedding

Peach and Wolfe – Dreamy badass stationary

Skin and Bones Jewellery –  Incredible designs and just beautiful

The Cake Spa – Marshmallows to die for and the yummiest cakes you’ll ever see.

Pink Palm Events – The raddest events planner

The House Of Love Illustration – Live illustration at your event – how cool

This Will Be Forever – prop hire to die for

But wait there is more and you can find the whole line up of vendors to view here

Now for the entertainment… well all I need to say is what a show they put on from fire breathing badass babes, killer catwalk to a drag bingo and a Trump drag act which was just hilarious and would just be the best thing to shock your auntie at the wedding with but on a serious note do check out these peeps because if you are looking for something alternative for your wedding then look no further.

Bespoke wedding dress for New York bride

Bespoke wedding dress for New York bride

Last year I had the pleasure of making this totally unique bespoke wedding dress for Kate who was getting married in New York – amazing I know right just wait till you see the pictures.

As I have currently stopped my wedding dress service to focus on my leather jackets this dress was an absolute stunner to end on. Find out more about my bespoke leather jackets here

Kate came for a consultation way back in 2018 to have a chat about her ideas on what she wanted. We talked about colours, shapes and fabrics plus it’s also a great way to get my clients to feel relaxed within my studio and find out how I work.

Her ideas back then were completely different to what she ended up having in the end, It’s amazing how much you change in just a year.

Fast forward to 2019 and after many discussions we decided on the shape, style and fabric. Which was the best choice in the end because it just fit so well with the whole look and feel of the wedding.

This is the final design we decided on.

So let’s talk about the fabrics and the shape.

When it came to the fabric I was looking for something elegant and soft, I came across this incredible tulle fabric that had delicate sequinned stars embroidered on in silver and pale gold which looked absolutely stunning.

I knew with the style we were making this had to be used and we did. The bespoke wedding dress was in two parts.

The under dress which was made with a  sweetheart neckline with boning for structure and a gradual flared skirt which was slightly up at the front to show off Kate’s kick ass boot from McQueen.

This was made from a subtle gold duchess satin fabric to tone in well with the tulle fabric.

The second dress was an over dress but the top half was made into a shirt style which look so elegant in the star fabric. The skirt part was the same as the under dress.

The over dress was made separate and with the intention to be worn again — which is even more cooler.

Oh but how could I forget the badass leather jacket she also had made to wear with her dress.

This was also made from a subtle gold leather to tone in with the wedding dress.

It was like everything just fell into place when we found the fabrics.

The collar being sewn in place

The making of the bespoke wedding dress.

I started with working with Kates measurements to create a bespoke pattern that was unique to her, I could then develop on this if anything was to change. The next step was to take this into a toile which is a sample garment that helps through the fitting stages.

This is made from a plain fabric to help study the shape and fit of the dress.

Once I was happy with the pattern and the sample garment was fitting to how I liked, I then cut Kate’s dress out in the actual fabric. This is the best bit because you actually start to see the dress come to life as you can see from the photos below.

The under dress being made with leopard print lining.

The top half of the shirt being prepared for the buttons

Final checks to see how it is looking

I started to make the bespoke wedding dress up in the actual fabric 6 months before so it gave us plenty of time for any amendments.

The most fiddly part of the dress was to get the shirt style top to sit right with it being made in a tulle fabric especially around the neck. It was very fine a delicate to sew too, it tested my skills but I got there in the end.

I was so please with the outcome of the dress and the best feeling ever was when Kate brought her friend for a fitting and she burst into tears because she loved it so much. I think we were all nearly in tears at that point.

Having a bespoke wedding dress made is such a unique experience, you see your actual vision come to life in different stages. I truly believe if you are thinking about going for it… do! It’s an incredible journey for the seamstress and the client.

Handmade leather jackets – Kiss Leather Jacket – I was made for lovin’ you

Handmade leather jackets – Kiss Leather Jacket – I was made for lovin’ you

Recently I had the pleasure of making this fun Kiss leather jacket for Jess a mega fan wanting to wear it for her wedding — super cool.

All my leather jackets are made form real leather and you can read more about why I make real leather jackets by hand here

I absolutely love the requests I get through for designs on the back but this one was a fun challenge to make, I’m not gonna lie when the bride contacted me it had me a bit nervous.

Just the font in itself was a bit tricky to get right but with perseverance I got there in the end.

With Jess being a huge Kiss fan and her first dance being to this song we decided to go for the lyrics I was made for lovin you on the back in the style of font they use.

I used a black glitter fabric for the lettering.

We also added a green mermaid glitter star behind it to compliment the glam side and the star face design one of the members has.

Here is the Kiss leather mid – design

For the leather jacket itself we uses a silver leather in a short waisted style so it sat perfectly with her dress and had an emerald green lining to match the star colours on the back.

I was a bit worried that the glitter would all merge together and you wouldn’t be able to read what it says but it worked out really well in the end.

The finished look of the Kiss leather jacket

Jess was so happy with the whole design of her jacket and was blown away with it being exactly how she wanted it to be. She even sent me a film of her opening her jacket when she received it through the post.

If you’re looking for that edgy style on your wedding day or even just for every day, then my handcrafted personalised leather jackets are just for you. Just like Jess and her Kiss leather jacket!

Services include:

Back patches: Have a certain theme, colour way — no idea to big or too small, I’m always up for a challenge.

Made to order jackets:  are available to buy from the born to shop page where you can invest in one of my hand drawn designs but if you have a specific design in mind please contact me as the price may differ,  I’m already excited to hear your ideas.

Is women’s bespoke clothing poor quality

Is women’s bespoke clothing poor quality

My answer to whether women’s bespoke clothing is poorly made is – not in the slightest at all! In fact it’s the complete opposite to what people think.

Did you know when clothing is made in mass produced factories its passed through several fast production lines which mean a certain amount of garments have to be made in a particular time.

Where is the love and care in that?

There will be a machinist for the body of the garment, a machinist for the zips, a machinist for the sleeves and so on and they don’t focus on the size its just how many they can get made in a day.

This is where believe the problem can occur because with them having to get so many number of items made in a day mistakes happen = garments not fitting properly.

Have you ever been to try something on and size doesn’t fit but them you try another size and it fits… well this is because its not made by the same person and care hasn’t gone into the making of the garment.

But it plays with your mindset doesn’t it,  I defiantly has for me I’ve gone to try things on and come away feeling not very confident and  bit disheartened about the whole shopping experience.

Why should I choose bespoke clothing then?

When you choose to go bespoke not only do you get care and attention going into the item but it is also made to you exact measurements.

That means when trying something on you come away feeling incredible and a hell of a lot more confident, I can guarantee you on that one.

When working with me 1:1 that is exactly what my main priority is : confidence.

It’s all in mindset when it comes to clothing and I believe confidence plays a big part. I love to tap into your personality and really get you to connect with who you are.

Confidence in clothing is everything — own that shit.

This is where I can eliminate the fear of clothing being made poorly as well because not only do you get to create a rocking leather jacket or piece of clothing you get to be apart of the journey too, you get to see how its made.

Bespoke Clothing – Is It expensive

Bespoke Clothing – Is It expensive

Bespoke Clothing

When it comes to the word bespoke or handmade it sounds expensive right?

And yes it might seem that when first enquiring but hear me out when you sit and think about how much you spend on fast fashion that doesn’t last then in the long run it actually works out a lot less in money.

Why?

  • its made to last a lifetime
  • Its made with care
  • Its made sustainably
  • Its made for you!

I believe you have to look at it from a mindset view, when you decide to go bespoke you will probably look after the item of clothing and enjoy wearing it so much more than what you would spending on something that you just buy for the sake of buying.

When it comes to bespoke clothing its an investment piece that is made to fit you so it will not only will it make you feel incredible, it will also last a lifetime.

The biggest cost usually when comes to a handmade outfit is the fabric but I believe if you use high quality fabrics then the end result will be high quality.

So what happens in a bespoke service?

I love to know everything you want from an outfit from your personality to the shapes you desire and style you are going for, I can then take that information and see what would work out best for you.

I work with sketches and fabric samples of your choice as a starting point to create your unique garment.

Working one to one with me is an incredible journey too because not only will you see how the construction of a garment comes together it will be to your exact measurements and that’s not something you from the high street.

Now don’t get me wrong there are some amazing companies on the high street that are turning to being more sustainable but if you are looking for a completely unique piece then I suggest you think about going bespoke-I guarantee it will be the best decision you make

5 myths about handmade clothing

5 myths about handmade clothing

Im here to talk about myths around handmade clothing and what is not so true. My aim in my business is to bring you quality handmade clothing that last a lifetime and in this blog post I’m going to discuss with you just why

Would you rather buy a piece of fast fashion over and over again or a very well made item that will last a lifetime? I know which one I would choose.

Buying a piece of tailored clothing is a daunting thought especially when you hear such things like:

  • its not well made — poor quality
  • Oh it will just fall apart
  • Its old fashioned
  • Its too expensive

So let’s dive into it.

5 myths about handmade clothing

1. Handmade garments are unfashionable

Wrong! I know it can seem like handmade clothing is just for grandmas who use the kitchen curtains to make a dress or mums who make up the duvet into costume for a school Christmas play… we’ve all been there yeah? I remember having a sheet wrapped around me for an angel in the nativity but enough about that.

Within my designs they are no way unfashionable, I research the latest trends, keep up to date with the latest colours and fabrics. In fact being sustainable and thrifty is the new trend so getting something handmade — you are bang on trend!

5 myths about handmade clothing

2. Handmade clothing is too expensive

Yes, it may seem that when first enquiring but if you sit and think abut how much you spend on fast fashion that doesn’t last then in the long run it actually works out a lot less in money.

When it comes to bespoke clothing its an investment piece that is made to fit you so it will not only make you feel incredible, it will also last a lifetime.

When you look at it from a mindset point of view you will probably look after it and enjoy wearing it more than what you would spending on something that you just buy for the sake of buying.

5 myths about handmade clothing

3. Hand made clothing is poor quality.

This is one for the mindset again because when you think of handmade you automatically think its going to fall apart because its not bought from a proper shop or it doesn’t have the label on it.

When in actual fact it’s made so much better. Everything in my studio is made from scratch not mass produced so from the cutting out to the sewing up its all checked over by me in which I make sure its made to the highest quality.

When In mass produced factories its passed through several fast production lines which mean a certain amount of garments have to be made in a certain time — where’s the love in that?

5 myths about handmade clothing

4. But you can’t send handmade clothing back

My business is based on made to order, personalised and bespoke clothing.

By law my made to order items I do accept returns for faulty reasons and simply if you change your mind.

My exception on bespoke and personalised I can accept returns on the bases on faulty or not as described. However If you do have a problem I always try to find a solution for you especially when it comes to the fit of the garment.

5 myths about handmade clothing

5. Handmade clothing is just for special occasions.

Bridal wear and evening wear are special occasions and people feel like these are the only times you should get something handmade.

But I disagree with this I think everyday is a special occasion, if you want to feel confident in what you wear and something that lets your personality shine through then having a piece of handmade clothing is the way to go.

Imagine opening up you wardrobe and seeing something that represents you and you feel excited to wear it — then I don’t have to say anymore.

I definitely think handmade clothing is coming back in a big way, especially when the fashion industry is the biggest threat to climate change. Making a change and buying less choosing well is the way forward.
